A proposal to speed-up the construction of Christchurch's new cycleways network has been rejected by councillors. In the draft Three Year Plan councillors put aside around $70 million in the budget to build 13 new cycleways in the city and a new $2m walkway around Lyttelton Harbour over the next five years, but today Cr Yani Johanson pushed for the council to accelerate the programme so that it was completed within three years. Johanson said it made sense to align the construction of the cycleways with the work the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (Scirt) was doing to fix the city's roads.
